Toadstools is a weirdly cyclical tale of illicit pickers risking their lives and sanity on behalf of a shady company. Here’s a snippet:
That night, I dreamed that the forest stretched out, an immense green labyrinth without end, covering the world. I slogged through oceans of mud, waded through banks of ferns, choking on mist and spores, the woods growing ever denser around me, until I gave up and lay down amongst the gorse in a gully and died. Eons passed. My clothes rotted. Great mats of spongy green moss grew from my shoulders like a cloak, spectacular whorls of blue and black mould spiralled across my chest, saucers of brown and yellow bracket fungus sprouted from my thighs and calves.
