+1 is a eerie flash fiction that flips the machismo of NASA’s programme in a wonderfully unexpected way. Here’s a snippet:

They made their way over the scorched ground. Seeing the blackened capsule again, Walter remembered pulling the body out from its torn shell. His spacesuit had been perfectly white. Walter had half-believed the astronaut still lived. Yet the visor was smashed and behind it lay burnt flesh and bare teeth. It had taken all Walter’s strength to drag the corpse from that cramped space.
