Joanne Shaw lives with her husband in a Derbyshire village. She taught before leaving to do a PhD in literature at Loughborough University. She has a published book about Samuel Beckett’s prose works. She has had two short pieces of fiction published: The Living Statue and Journey to the Window.

Fish Child tells the story of a bereaved mother whose impulsive early morning walk triggers a string of events that lead her to follow her son to his watery grave. Here’s a snippet:

I place it carefully in my son’s cot. I turn on the mobile with the six twirling mermaids that he loves. His eyes are closed, his underside rises and falls gently. I cover him with my scarf. Its twinkling mirrors are tiny rock pools.
