Space Cat’s Porthole Opens

Happy Friday, Space Cats!

Our big news this week is that we’re opening our porthole for submissions again! Between 10th March and 12th May this year, you can submit writing on the theme of Into the Forest for our 2023 anthology. We also have two new events to announce.

A New Submission Call (10th March – 12th May)

We’re looking for our usual mix of genres and a wide array of approaches to the theme. So your imagination might turn to Eco-writing, Forest Fables, Urban Jungles or Space Trees. We welcome short stories, poetry, flash fiction and creative non-fiction. Do take a look at last month’s blog where we announced the theme and explored thematic possibilities. Definitely read Submission Guidelines carefully.  Then walk into the forest, listen to the trees and see where they take you.

States of Independence 2023 (18th March)

To help you find inspiration with this theme, there’ll be writing prompts throughout the next month on our social media. So look out for those. We’re also offering a free writing workshop with SCP editor Siobhan Logan at the marvellous indie publishing fair, States of Independence 2023. This FREE book festival is held on Sat. 18th March at DMU’s campus in Leicester, Clephan Building, 10am – 4pm. Our Space Cat team will be running a bookstall all day too so do come over for a chat if you’re about in the city. And stay to sample the packed programme of panels, talks, readings and booksellers. It’s a wonderful festival with small presses from around the country.

Writing Into the Forest Workshop with Siobhan Logan

Sat. 18th March, 2 – 2.45 PM

A fun and FREE creative writing workshop. Space Cat Press editor, Siobhan Logan, will use short exercises to inspire forest-themed writing in any genre. We will explore immersive writing, the place of forests in our fables and finding characters or creatures under the trees. Potentially this could spark a piece to submit for Space Cat Press’ next anthology, submission window opening March 10th – May 12th 2023. Pre-booking this free States workshop via Eventbrite is essential.

ROSETTA’S MIDNIGHT BARGE event at Space Centre (9th May)

We marked last week’s 19th anniversary of ESA’s Rosetta space mission with the news that a print edition of Logan’s Rosetta book is now available for pre-orders. Over the next fortnight, up till 17th March, you can put in pre-orders for ROSETTA’S MIDNIGHT BARGE: Crossing the Comet’s Underworld at the discounted price of £6. It will then be published on Sat. 18th March and signed copies can be purchased from our bookstall at the States of Independence book fair at DMU campus.

We’ve also just confirmed a spoken word event for the Leicester Astronomical Society in May 2023 at the National Space Centre in Leicester. Conjuring Egyptian gods, ESA scientists and the comet’s otherworldly landscape, author Siobhan Logan will read from her book and explore the lasting impact of the Rosetta mission.

Come join our voyage to relive the wildest comet adventure.
